This may be my favorite episode ever!!  Bob Plott follows in the footsteps of his great-great-great grandfather, who traveled to the Americas in the 1750s with 5 dogs and established them into the frontier culture of the Carolinas. 200 plus years later they are known as one of the best big game dogs ever, Bob still breeds and hunts these dogs. When you hunt with one, its like shaking hands with American history.

I use to dream of retiring in the west, After this episode I'm giving my self a transfer and relocating to North Dakota. Truly a wingshooters dream. Tyler and I chat about his (free) newspaper dog and all of the opportunities that ND offers. 3 species of upland in his own backyard, ducks and geese, spring snow goose, and sandhill cranes. His job, which gives him a huge advantage in locating game rich areas, and a few other subjects from shot guns to decoys, and beer to bourbon.

Larry McKurtis his friend Jesse and a Setter named Ava, hunt Chuckar in the mountains of Nevada. Which apparently are a warm up hunt, for their pursuit of Himalayan Snowcock!! This bird lives in only two mountain ranges and hang out on the highest peaks. If you can even get to 11,000 ft you might only hear their alarm call and get a glimpse of them rocketing down hill in the direction you just came up!!! Larry is also Nevada chairmen of  Back Country Hunters and Anglers and we talk about the importance of that and other sportsman's groups who are fighting the good fight for all of us.

I talk with Randy Lack, a life long bird hunter who hails from and hunts New Mexico. We learn about his new TV show, Gun Dog TV and his history of hunting for so long that he cant remember exactly when it was he shot his first bird.  Randy has vast experience with the four quail species from his home state. ( In the words of my dear departed father"shit or get off the pot") and a Big thanks to those who have taken the time to help with sending great reviews.  Ron

Today I get my old friend Rusty Wolf on the phone to walk down memory lane. From our first guns,to first dogs, and a few other firsts that can only happen when you've known one person almost your entire life. We talk about growing up in Chicago, BB guns, road trips, and a special vehicle that we called "The Bec Moblie" Drinking beer before 4pm and how not to turn off a diesel truck when you stop for gas. The two of us are so intuned with each other we can almost finish each other sentences.  I've heard a few people say that there wife is their best friend. And heard more than once that "I want to be my kids best friend"  I have the best wife in the world, I have 3 outstanding daughters,  But my best friend???? that can only be one person  Rusty Wolf.

Ted Nugent and his dogs!!!  It took a long time to get this dog loving, small game hunting rock star,to come on the podcast.  This is the other side of Ted that alot of people don't know. He grew up with Labs and mutts, had Irish Setters and Brittanies. He may seem to be only a bow hunter, but he has spent more time afield with his dogs, then he has in a tree. We talk about his first dog and and the two he currently lives with. Ted talks about his first shotgun, bumper crop years of grouse and woodcock, and a shared destination passion we both have. his dogs Happy and Gonzo would prefer that he never deer hunts, it take his time away from them...

This is one of my favorite conversations ever. Todd Agnew owns Craney Hill Kennels. his breed of choice it English Springer Spaniels. We talk about everything from range to desire. Wild birds vs training, breeding, hunting, and what dogs are best suited for the average sportsman. The Springers strongest suit and their weakest.  I have a new found desire to hunt a Springer in South Dakota, just to get even with those sneaky pheasants.if you dont learn something from this episode, your not paying attention.  And please... give us a rating and or comment on Itunes.  I cant bear having a podcast about fluffy dogs or seeing eye dogs having a better rating than the dogs we love.

I visit with Rick at his Virginia home. Just being in his office gave me goosebumps. We talk about lots of Smith family history, including horses, BiPlanes, favorite shotguns, puppies, wonder leads, and much more.  The Smith family has been messing with bird dogs for almost 100 years.. Not sure if there is any other family that can say that!!!

After John's Griffon cleared the room we resume for more laughs and lies

Feb 1, 2015

I travel up to Traverse City Mi to talk with 3 people Ive know for almost twenty years. Lance Vernam and John Macneal talk about their 3 year quest to shoot every known species of upland birds in North America over their personal gun dogs. Judy Balog ( who handled the first Weimaraner to a Versatile Champion in NAVHDA history) joins in to tell us how she first found her favorite breed.  Warning: most us us were over served prior to this podcast. Sounds problems due to my lack of recorder placment and Johns dog farting us out of the room, caused me to stop the podcast instead of pausing. So you will have to listen to both podcasts in order to take it all in.
