I met Dale almost 20 years ago. He pulled into training grounds with a breed that not many hunters were willing to try. Yet he went further with those dogs than most hunters ever do. listen up as we go down memory lane.

Glen Blackwood in a Michigan grouse and woodcock addict. So much so, that if he isn't out swinging a double gun or fishing, he is reading, collecting and selling books about hunting and fishing. With a stockpile of 4000 books on the shelves of his fly shop in Rockford MI. Get a pencil and pad before you hit the play button.

Besides running Walker hounds on bobcats and lions, running a brewery and winery, Joe is running to the aid of the African Rhino. Joe has been training an elite pack of Texas hounds to live in Africa and help track down and apprehend poachers!!! That's right, stopping poaching under the threat of being run down by a trained pack of hounds may change the face of wildlife in Africa.

Justin is back on the show to answer listeners question about their dogs. do and don'ts, right and wrong, and especially what not to do with your first bird dog!!! There isn't a better dog trainer this side of Big Cabin Oklahoma. We dive into some great listener questions, and come up with some solid advise from a trainer that I respect. Justin's secret is (if there is one) Don't be in a hurry, dogs like children all progress at different speeds. And much like my foramtive years of Kindergarten thru High School, some dogs only learn so much.... Bringing out the talents of your dog can be more rewarding than training to a level that could be out of reach. Get a pencil and take notes.

Alex Brittingham is a dog trainer from Texas, you might think that is common, but she dialed it up a notch when she decided to train her Jack Russel "Gator" to hunt ducks and geese. This young women is driven to show the world what you can do with a dog, any dog. We have a great conversation about her start and her future in the dog world.

Jon Keehner earned his PhD. in Carnivore Ecology. We talk about the reintroduction of wolves in the lower 48. My background in wolves came from Google and Grimm's fairy tales. Jon's background is just a little bit deeper, ( like comparing a puddle to a lake) we talk about the reality of sharing the landscape with wolves and what it will take to truly to keep them managed. We also talk a little duck hunting, conservation, and hunter perception in the public eye.

Kris Hill is a mainstay of the Small Munsterlaner. 20 years of staying with a (then minority breed) have paid off in spades for her and the breed. We have all heard the term "this dog hunts"  Kris and her pack have gone to the pinnacle of training, testing and hunting. She owns Hunting Hills Kennel, and has dedicated a good portion of her life to the Small Munsterlander.  We catch up on old times, NAVHDA testing and some of our favorite common friends in the dog world

Franks book "Fifty-Five years a Grouse Hunter" is possibly the best book I've ever read. It comes from a true dog man, and sportsman. We talk about the old days and the present. His travels across the country with his dogs and his passion for the grouse. If we can learn anything from another hunter, we can learn what it takes to be a true sportsman and bird lover, yet still take a few birds for the table.

Roger has a deep history with hunting in the UK and we compare that to his years here in the States. And of course we talk about his favorite breed of dogs.  The field bred English Cocker.  And we talk about why I need one!!

Mar 26, 2018

Sam Wiest is a long time bird hunter, that opened his heart and mind to hunting with dogs that other people abandoned. His journey is one of true love for the dog. Sam purchased dogs when he started out, but when his wife started helping find homes for dogs that no one wanted, a few bird dogs were thrown into the mix. He has stepped up to the plate and hit some home runs with his adopted companions.

You cant argue with results. NAPPA (N.American Pudel Pointer Alliance) is without a doubt, a formula for sucess. I can only hope to bring my favorite breed up to this stantard.  We also go down memory lane about our years in NAVHDA and some of our favorite characters.

Mar 11, 2018

Beside being a long time NAVHDA judge, Bob started NAPPA The North American Pudelpointer Alliance. Along with a handful of concerned owners and breeders of one of the truly versatile breeds, they formed a group of like minded breeders that set their own goals and standards.

The alliance has turned out amazing hunting companions to hunters all across America. The philosopy of NAPPA is one to aspire to. Over the years these dedicated breeders continue to raise the bar on themselves, and the test results speak loud and clear. We also go through many of our favorite times in the NAVHDA organization. and we review his new book " Breeding&Training Versatile Hunting Dogs-For Hunting and Hunt Tests"

I am a total fan of combat sports, I talked with a legend of the UFC. Chad is a world class wrestler, and UFC competitor. but more importantly he is a hunter at heart. His upbringing in the outdoors may be why he has what it take to step into the Octagon. From an early age, he was either competing or following his Dad in the mountains of California chasing deer.

Feb 25, 2018

Great talk with Courtney about the breed she hunts, trains, and tests. The German Longhaired pointer is a sleeper in this country, but in Europe it has proven itself to be a true versatile hunting companion. Along with being the breed warden for Deutsch Langharr North America, Courtneyis also the Hunting Heritage Program manager for Pheasants Forever.  We get into the nuts and bolts of the breed and her mission with Pheasants Forever.

I still need to pinch myself, that I was able to spend time with a legend of the dog training world. Delmar was born into a world that most,or all of us can't wrap our minds around. A life of working with animals and the natural world. His simple approach to training has brought him fame, but his approach to life is what made him who he his. A true dogman and a true people person. If i never do another interview, I will have zero regrets. Enjoy

Feb 11, 2018

This interview was inspiring, in fact, it helped me rethink my own passions for dogs and birds. Randy lost most of his right leg to cancer about 9 years ago, but he never lost his drive or his passion for bird hunting. he is NOT a handicapped hunter!!!! He is a true sportsman with a will to continue, his motto is "get busy living"  It might be karma, but he finally has a Setter that retrieves to hand!!!!

Feb 5, 2018

I hit the record button during our (almost monthly) card game. A bunch of my NAVDA training/hunting buddies, tell a few stories about first dogs, best dogs, and who's the worst wingshot. might be some PG13 language. and not politically correct dog stories.

Jan 21, 2018

Matt Davis is a hardcore chuckar and upland hunter. He is also the sales and marketing VP. of MTN OPS. We talk about the company he works for and the company he keeps in the field. His dogs Reload and Avery make the dynamic dual of hunting the high west.

Jan 16, 2018

I have been waiting a long time to get Kirby on the podcast. My passion for old double guns has been growing.Kirby Hoyt is my go-to guy for stepping into the next level of shooting heritage firearms. When you hold a scattergun that has history, lore, and a feel of art, it makes the upland experiance even better.

Jan 8, 2018

One of my favorite conversations ever. Randy Newberg is known for his elk hunting in the Rocky Mountains, but what what most people dont know is he has a grouse obsession that overwhelms him. He is known for stopping a elk stalk to arrow his favorite table fare. growing up in northern Minnesota, he gathered more grouse for the cook pot than most of us will ever harvest. When it comes to tactics he might say." If they act like rabbits, treat em like rabbits"

Jan 5, 2018

Seth drives over to the kennel with one of his dogs, and we dig deep into his favorite breed. The Braque Francais not a French Shorthair!! We dig into the Clubs of rare breeds, and talk about the reasons we choose a breed that is not well known in the uplands of the USA

Dec 22, 2017

Finally did the episode that folks have been asking me for three years.. Dale Merritt has been hunting and breeding pointing labs for 25 years. We talk about the history, and the future of the pointing Lab in America. It was a real eye opener for me. Let  me know if this was something you have wondered about as long as I have.....

Criags latest book is a good read, makes me feel like an underachiever when it come to adventures with my dogs. Along with his quirky habit of never going on a hunting trip without a package of Oreo cookies for him and his dogs, he also has an obsession with a 1960 Land Rover. Also know for wearing breeks and a tie on the season opener. And to top it off, Craig shoots most of his birds with a .410 shotgun.
